[voice] it had been strange, even in a dream

[While over the past few days the draft has been threatening the lives of cast-mates and strangers and acquaintances alike Admiral Norrington has been fighting a battle of his own. He chose the evening of the fourth to investigate the purpose of that odd little bump on his wall. Flick.

At once he murmured a quick curse to himself and spun around. All alone in his apartment he stepped back and drew his sword. There was no-one at the door, of course, no army of pranksters could have simultaneously lit up each and every one of the candles on all the tables and counters in the room. The light was coming from above. He narrowed his eyes at the brilliant bulb and tentatively flicked the light-switch back with the tip of his blade. Darkness. Light. Darkness. Light.

It was quite enough excitement for one evening.

On the morning of the fifth he tried all of the lights in his apartment, and then a few on the landing outside. Buoyed by his success, he then investigated the electrical devices in his residence and the kitchen beyond - strange boxes with nobs and things which he had ignored up until now. Unlike the light these made horrendous droning noises, or else they glowed in unearthly shades of red and gave off uncanny amounts of heat. He aborted his efforts for fear of them.

Today he sits at a table in the kitchen and opens his journal.]

Might I request that someone explain by what force the light above my head is being generated? And, since I hardly believe that mine are the only quarters to be granted them, what on earth is the function of all of these peculiar boxes?

[To a man who believes that suspending meat in barrels of salty water is high-tech this idea seems somehow more miraculous than a food-making machine would be.]

How much longer?

[And to an admiral of the British navy the potential for such a device is incredible. If food were to last so much as a week beyond its expected spoiling date it could save the lives of countless men aboard ship. An entire fleet could travel that much further with fewer stops. This box could revolutionize the navy overnight.]

[Just as well, then, that he has already been informed of the truth of the matter.]

You mock me.

Doubtful; seems your place would've been beside Kennedy, with his cannon. I was merely defending McCoy's hospital. And now you have kitchen woes?

Depends on the food. Meat stays fresh a lot longer, some fruits, some vegetables. Mayonnaise, too. And milk. [Man, Norrington, this is going to rock your world. IMAGINE AN EXISTENCE WITHOUT SALT PORK or whatever the non-Little House equivalent is.] And if you just want something chilled--say you made aspic--then it's good for that, too.

[But don't make aspic (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Aspic), Norrington. Use this technology for good, not what the 1950s thought was good.]

[To think that this would be common anywhere..]

It must truly be a fascinating place.

[That Archie boy was out there too? Further evidence that he isn't the childish coward that he appears.]

While you have been fighting I have been experimenting with bulbs of light. Now I am being introduced to electricity-boxes.

Honestly. I believe I shall stick with my candles.

Maybe, but my world seems to be behind compared to a lot of others. Yours just might have not caught up yet.

If you want my advice, James? Adapt. I know it's always been your weakness, this inability or cussed pig-headedness against change, but in this place it might save your life.

All it requires is the flipping of a switch, after all.

You had anyone explain electricity yet?

...You might want to put that on a plate.

[ someone stop this; buffy should never teach cookery. ]

Just a little bit?

[ well now she kind of feels bad. ...not that bad, though. ]

For the record, my sister isn't exactly the most reliable teacher of food-related stuff on the planet. [ because in dawn's mind, who DOESN'T know she's buffy's sister. ]

[Which would mean open the door again. He's fairly certain that the girl is stalling, but he obligingly fetches a plate and puts the sausage on it. Back in microwave, door closed again, he looks at the journal expectantly.]
herotypical: (} you never have to do that stuff)

[ this is possibly the most pathetic conversation she has had over the journals in a very long time. ]

...Okay, first? Was it frozen?

[In fact he had been developing his own view on the idea of change for some time. The first change was the hardest and he'd fought it tooth and nail; the idea that honor existed outside of the trappings of the royal navy. That grand concepts such as 'right' and 'good' were not always defined by the law, or even enabled by it. Coming to terms with that change had cost him his life. Now the changes were coming thick and fast.

So the interior is changing, but the exterior? Not just yet. Flatly, sarcastically, he replies.]

Flipping this switch will save my life.

[personal profile] all7seas 2011-06-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No, mate: adapting. Adapting will save your life.

[And Jack is not exactly aware of these changes and is just going to go with the whole "alliance" thing for as long as he needs to.]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well she certainly seems to have a head on her shoulders. If he can overlook the fact that she may have just insulted his entire world, she might even be considered polite.]

My name is Admiral James Norrington. It is a pleasure to meet you.

[ voice ]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, Norrington for one. As such he's having trouble understanding where exactly that came from.]

I shall keep that in mind. Did she... teach you, perhaps?

[Is warning him away from herself in a roundabout sort of way?]

[identity profile] crytearsofjoy.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Winry Rockbell, and the pleasure is mine. Judging by your questions you're new to Luceti, aren't you?

[voice]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Not as such, no.

[He knows that electricity is what is powering the lights and the fridge and the microwave, but not a great deal more than that. It hadn't seemed important at the time.]

[ video ]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[How on earth would he have kept it frozen at this time of year? Again she is playing him for a fool. He replies in a monotone.]

No.

[ voice ]

[identity profile] tothelibrary.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm approximately five times the cook Buffy is. [ says the girl who thinks putting frosting and crumbled up oreos on top of kettlecorn is haute cuisine, sit down littlest summers. ] I'm just saying, if you take her cooking advice expect fire and/or broken teeth.
herotypical: [ snarky ; pout ] (✝ and i could work weekends)

[personal profile] herotypical 2011-06-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...Oh! Wait -- you should probably poke it a few times with a fork, too. Otherwise? Sausage explosion. No one wants that.

[voice]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Just wait 'til he starts walking around in jeans and a t-shirt, Jack. Then you'll see.]

And you suggest that I begin by adapting to this bulb. I see. Very well, Jack. I shall practice at flipping switches until I have quite mastered the skill.

[Is he joking? No-one knows.]

[ voice ]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[He should have known the moment that he felt that sensation of trying to put a jigsaw together with only 30% of the pieces. This girl and Buffy, sisters.]

Then it is well that I have not yet sampled the cuisine at Good Spirits. Excuse me, what is your name?

[ video ]

[identity profile] abidinglaw.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[At the mention of explosions the admiral abruptly snaps the microwave open again. He removes the meaty lump and sets it gently on the counter.]

That is enough. I thank you for your help, but perhaps I should wait until somebody more...

[Reliable? Experienced? Trustworthy?]

Capable is available to aid me.

[Wow. Capable. Good save Norrington.]
